Meta recently announced an important change to WhatsApp's policies that has raised many questions among users and businesses. Starting January 2026, the use of third-party artificial intelligence tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude AI will be prohibited in the messaging app. But hold on: this restriction does not affect all types of AI use on the platform.
Which Types of AI Will Be Blocked on WhatsApp?
The ban applies specifically to primary artificial intelligence providers that distribute their models directly to end users. A clear example is adding ChatGPT's phone number to your contacts to chat with OpenAI's AI through WhatsApp. This practice, while popular, was not covered in Meta's original Business API policies.
According to the company, these use cases overload its systems due to the high volume of messages. In addition, the Business API was developed for business-to-consumer communication, not for distributing AI tools to the general public. As a result, services like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude AI will need to find other ways to interact with users.
Will Customer Service Tools With AI Continue Working Normally?
Great news for businesses: customer service bots will not be affected by the new policy. If your business uses WhatsApp Business with intelligent chatbots to respond to customers, direct inquiries, or assist with sales, you can rest easy. The restriction only applies to AI offered as a primary service to the end user.
New Byte's solutions, for example, will not be affected by this change. Since our technology operates as a business service tool, not as the direct distribution of an AI model to end users, all features continue to operate without any interruption. Travel agencies, online stores, clinics, and other businesses that rely on automation to serve their customers can continue operating normally.
Understand the difference? The change is designed to organize the WhatsApp ecosystem and promote Meta AI, the company's own solution. If you use bots for your business, especially New Byte's solutions, there is no reason for concern. Want to optimize your WhatsApp service with artificial intelligence?
